What Is a Seizure?

A seizure is a neurological condition characterized by falling to the side, convulsions, and loss of consciousness. Some animals might also urinate, salivate, and defecate. Seizures can last for a couple of seconds to several minutes. In most cases, they do not last longer than 2 minutes.

What Causes Seizures In Pets?

There are many different causes of seizures, depending on the pet breed and age. The most common causes are the following:

  • Inside and outside activities in the brain
  • Various diseases and disorders, including degenerative diseases, birth defects, immune-inflammatory diseases, infections, and cancer
  • Trauma
  • Problems with liver and kidneys
  • Toxin poisoning
  • Low blood sugar level

What Should You Do If Your Pet Is Having a Seizure?

The first and most important thing is to ensure that your dog or cat does not fall because falling might cause injuries. Try to keep your pet on the floor and away from the stairs. Do not leave your animal alone and keep track of how long the seizure is lasting. Pay attention to all the symptoms you are witnessing.  Take a video to show it later to a veterinarian. Do not move your pet until the seizure is over. Since some animals urinate and defecate during seizures, you may want to put some towels or newspapers under him in case an accident happens. Keep monitoring your animal when the seizure is over because he will be disoriented for a while and might injure himself. When it is over, call our veterinarian and let us know your animal had a seizure. We will guide you on the next steps to take.
